Wells and Young’s Brew Celebratory Birthday Beer for Keech Hospice Care

17th April 2012

Bedford based Wells and Young’s has brewed a limited edition birthday beer for its official charity – Keech Hospice Care - to celebrate the 21st anniversary of its founding.

The Keech Hospice Care 21st Birthday Beer bottles feature the purple balloon branding associated with the hospice and will be sold at summer events to help raise vital funds for Keech.

The beer was launched at the brewery with special guests from the Hospice and the Brewer being joined by local dignitaries including Councillor Norman Costin who was also present at the opening of the Hospice 21 years ago and Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Dr Vaughan Southgate. Guests were invited to learn about the brewing process and given a tutored tasting of the beer from Wells and Young’s International Brewmaster Jim Robertson.

The brewery and its staff have strong links with the Luton-based Hospice, which cares for children with life limiting conditions across Milton Keynes, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, and adults in Luton and South Bedfordshire. They’ve supported the charity in a number of ways including holding cake sales, raffle days and organising a fire-walking event, raising over £10,000 to date.

Paul Wells, Chairman of Wells and Young’s said “It was a natural extension of our ongoing relationship to brew a Birthday beer to celebrate Keech Hospice Care’s momentous anniversary. We are really proud of our Bedfordshire heritage and are committed to supporting this local charity in their vital work in the area. Our hope is that the beer proves to be a novel way of fundraising that helps them continue to provide the fantastic care for those who need it.”

Mike Keel, Chief Executive of Keech Hospice Care said: "We are very grateful for the support that we get from Wells and Young’s and our anniversary beer is typical of their willingness to work with us and try new ideas. We are the only hospice to have our own beer and we hope that it will capture people's imagination. To ensure that we can continue to support families living locally for the next 21 years we need to continue to find unique and innovative ways to raise funds and our birthday beer is a perfect example of that. We are proud to be associated with such a renowned Bedfordshire brewer as Wells and Young's and look forward to working closely together."

The beer is available from Keech Hospice Care on 01582 707940.
