CHARLES WELLS PUBS IN RACE TO BE BEST IN COUNTRY

Licensees of five Charles Wells’ pubs are nervously biting their finger nails as they await the opening of ceremonial award envelopes.

All five have reached the finals of competitions recognising excellence and will know in the next two months if they have been successful.

Licensed trade paper, The Morning Advertiser, has already announced that three pubs are regional winners in their respective categories. This accolade confirms that they are the best pubs of their type in the Anglia region. Darron and Sarah Smith of The Park, Kimbolton Road, Bedford took the Best Managed House category, Rachel Salaun of the Gloucester Arms, Gloucester Road, Bedford has been named as Best Newcomer and Bob and Pauline Sapsford of The Red Lion Hotel, Salford have been recognised for running the Best Pub Promotion.

All three regional winners now progress to the National judging stage and presentation of the awards at a prestigious ceremony held at Billingsgate Market in February.

Kieran and Nora Guthrie of The Railway Tavern, New Barnet have a longer wait to hear their fate in the Customer Service category of The Publican Awards, also recognising excellence in the licensed trade. The pub has recently been refurbished and additional features added to improve the facilities for customers but it’s Kieran, Nora and their team who ultimately provide the welcome their customers enjoy.

Meanwhile, in Long Lawford, near Rugby, Pat Goring has received praise from a more unusual source. House Beautiful magazine has been looking for ‘Unsung Community Heroes’ around the Country and Pat has been named a finalist in the Most Hospitable Landlord/Landlady category. Pat runs The Bear with husband Ian and son and daughter in law, Matthew and Vicki Warwick, and the family team have firmly established the pub in the heart of their community, most noticeably by raising hundreds of pounds for local charities.

Charles Wells Retail Marketing Director, Peter Wells, commented “There are over 250 pubs in our estate and we could be accused of bias when we tell everyone what a fantastic job our licensees do. There can be no doubt, however, when our managers and tenants are recognised by outside organisations and we are thrilled that their hard work has been rewarded in such a tangible way. We are very proud of them all and wish them every success in their respective finals.”

Check details of all Charles Wells pubs on their website, www.charleswells.co.uk, and visit them to see just what makes them stand out from the crowd for yourself.

The Morning Advertiser National Awards will be announced on Thursday 2nd February. House Beautiful will reveal their winners on Monday 6th February and The Publican Award winners will be notified on Tuesday 21st March 2006.
