Record Month as Corona Extra Sales Soar

Corona Extra has clinched the number three Premium Packaged Lager (PPL) slot in the UK on trade and achieved record sales, as the brand continues its meteoric rise.
Sales of the imported beer have shot up by 30 percent in the first half of 2006 and the latest figures from AC Nielsen (MAT to May 2006) confirm its new position as the third biggest selling PPL. The new data, which coincides with the biggest ever UK sales month for Corona Extra in June, also shows the brand:
  • Has become the No. 1 selling PPL in the managed pub sector.
  • Is the No. 1 selling four-pack PPL in the grocery multiples.
  • Retains its crown as the fastest growing Top 25 beer brand in the UK.

Now Corona Extra – the world's fourth biggest selling beer brand – is launching a major offensive to boost sales further through the second half of the year, including:

  • A major advertising campaign in key trade and consumer titles.
  • Headline sponsorship of the World Superbike Championships, attracting worldwide publicity, with the next UK round taking place at Brands Hatch on Sunday August 6.
  • A programme of sponsored festivals and outdoor events throughout the summer.

Angel Garcia Gomez, who heads Corona Extra in the UK, said: “The growth strategy for the brand has been to focus resources on below-the-line initiatives and also to develop innovative, long-term marketing programmes to differentiate the brand from the competitors.”

Brewed at source in Mexico by Grupo Modelo, the world’s eighth largest brewery, Corona Extra is sold and distributed in England and Wales by Bedford-based brewer Charles Wells.

Nigel McNally, Sales and Marketing Director at Charles Wells, added: “Clearly the marketing strategy for Corona Extra is paying dividends and the time is right to now further augment this with high impact trade and consumer advertising to continue to drive sales and distribution.”
