Players Set To Mix It Up In Vinyl Countdown To Worldcup Glory

While England’s footballers are striving for success in Germany, the nation’s top music mixers will be facing their own global challenge.

Now in its fifth year, the Movida Corona contest aims to showcase the best up-and-coming club and bedroom DJs, acting as a recognised launch-pad onto the international stage. More than 500 mixing masters from the across the UK battled it out in last year’s competition – and organisers are expecting even more this year.

The road to the Movida Corona world final – and the chance to compete against winners from more than 70 countries – starts with a series of heats across the country.

Local mixing masterminds will show off their talent on the turntables and the winner will go on to a regional final.

That then leads onto the Movida Corona UK final – last year’s was held at London superclub Ministry of Sound – and the chance for the ultimate prize of a place in the world championship, which last year took place in Morocco. Details have yet to be unveiled on this year’s location.

Winners at each of the rounds will receive fantastic Ecler mixing equipment and Corona Extra prizes.

So it’s all set for a sizzling summer of great football and fantastic sounds – thanks to Corona Extra, the ultimate party beer, distributed by Bedford-based Charles Wells Ltd.

Last year’s world final took place in Morocco and the winner drove away in a 4x4 Suzuki Jimny, with hundreds of pounds of Korg music equipment and a host of Corona Extra goodies.

In 2003 Midlands DJ Andy Milford put rival mixing maestros in a spin to clinch the world title and has never looked back.

He said, “Simply taking part in Movida Corona was a fantastic experience – but winning it was just unbelievable. My DJing career has gone through the roof, taking me to leading venues all over the world, including Italy, Canada and Mexico.

“And, to add to it all, I’m now responsible for arranging Movida Corona throughout the UK. I feel proud and privileged to be at the helm of Movida Corona again this year.

“This is a tournament for passionate DJs, who believe that Djing is not just a matter of putting records on, but is a ‘bona fide’ art form requiring a credible platform, the Movida Corona contest provides that platform.

“It is a pleasure to have Ministry of Sound on board again this year. For many Ministry of Sound is the ‘hall of dreams’ and, for most DJs, simply the chance to play there is a lifetime ambition fulfilled. This, coupled with the emotion of the competition, creates the most euphoric finale.

Between now and the end of the summer, clubbers will be able to witness top spin doctors weaving their mixing magic during 22 heats in towns and cities across the UK.
